Did you do that on purpose?

Did you?

What I mean is, when you sat down in front of your computer, did you have time set aside just for checking up on your social media? I’m not pointing fingers, trust me. I’m asking for advice.

I am convicted about  surfing through minutes I could be seizing to improve relationships and skills.

I hop on Facebook to reply to personal messages about stuff that really matters, but I get so swept up by all of the wonderful things you are all posting that before you know it…POOF! I just spent 20 minutes giving your cutie-pie-pictures the “thumbs up” and I completely forgot why I got on in the first place. Am I alone on this?

Some of you emailed me with suggestions for  topics you’d like to explore together. Balancing social media was a favorite, along with exploring the needs of orphans.

Maybe you feel like me. In order to tame my social media habits and deal with the burdens of my heart, I need an action plan. Life is just too crazy and precious to proceed without one.  checklist

Michael Hyatt, former CEO of Thomas Nelson publishing, offers a free ebook called, “Creating Your Personal Life Plan” on his blog. He gives practical tips on how to move your prayers into actionable, measurable steps. I downloaded his free guide and Adam is taking a day off of work so that we can plow through our goals. All suggestions for implementing social media limits into our plan are welcome.

For the daily details of our big plan I’m going to use this free printable goal chart created by the inspirational Lauren Mills on her blog, MercyInk. {I love Lauren’s example of using her talents to support a ministry that won her heart. You should watch the video on her sidebar…with tissues. You’ve been warned.}  mercy ink live brave

My friends, Davina and Andy, just charted a three year plan for their family including everything from home ownership, to gratitude journals and pedicures.  If, by setting such lofty goals for themselves, they are able to attain even a quarter of them they’ll reap a bounty of rich, character-building memories to cherish for a lifetime.

I love lofty goals – yours, ours, and mine.  They remind me to do things on purpose.

Will you come back on purpose this Friday? I want to share something encouraging for you, and tell you about something encouraging going on in my life.

  1. Oh my I so, so relate. I really do *try* to be as intentional about social media… I hate getting sucked in! But it seems to be inevitable. I’m really excited to hear what else you have in store :) And thank you so very much for sharing the goal planner… hope it blesses some people. You are too kind. Glad to “meet” you & look forward to reading more! blessings, -l

    • So good to “meet” you as well, Lauren! Your heart for God & others has blessed me since the first time I landed on your blog. What a joy to know we’re in this together.

  2. The Internet can always suck so much precious time. Thanks for the link to creating your personal life plan, I’m half way thru my life and I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to do since I was in high school but didn’t think about what I’d do after I’ve reached those goals. Jay and I are going to have to make a life plan now that our youngest is about to graduate from HS. Thank you!
    Can’t wait til Friday :)

  3. Thanks, Kerry. I have been challenged by the thought of being intentional about social media, too. I go back and forth between sometimes wanting to “chuck” all of it and realizing there are useful and meaningful ways to use it. I was looking at my yearly observations from the past 3 years recently and one of the questions is: What is single biggest time waster in your life? My answer for the past 3 years has been Facebook. Looking forward to your Friday post :)

    • Me too! Every time I pluck up the resolve to close my account, I end up getting a message that’s ministry related and relevant. What I’ve come to realize is that for me, the problem is me. I’ve been aware of things I need to change for too long. It’s crunch time! I gotta’ “squeeze the day”!
